The walk of shame. That's what I call my walk into work from the car every morning. Walk of shame because there are partners who have garage access that pass you along your walk. If I roll into the SODO area around 6:20am I'm usually 673 steps from the building. If I arrive at 6:10 it's reduced to 493 steps. 5:45 we're talking 110 and 5:00...? roughly 30-60 steps.
During my usual 673 steps, I do alot of thinking. One day it was "I wonder how many steps ts is from my car to the building?"... the next day it was "I wonder how many steps it is from my car to my cubicle?" Some butthead said "Hi" to me in the elevator and ruined my count so I never got the number... then I forgot about it. Right now I'm thinking I can just go to the entrance and count from there to my desk and add it to 673 but then that's cheating. Sometimes it's about the process not the result.
Today's thoughts were about how people connect in a training environment. They're doing some test on children right now during their lunch period to get them mixing with the other kids outside of their usual group to socialize and do different activities to engage. I think it's the same with adults. In fact, I'm pretty sure that you actually "learn" something if you tie education to an activity or experience. The experience promotes an emotional response that is then linked in your brain to the learning. This thing I'm doing right now?? Yeah... I'm learning. I'm learning that I can develop a pretty good blog entry by starting with the concept of 673 steps that I came up with a few weeks ago when I was trying to fill the "WALK OF SHAME" with some kind of useful activity.
Yesterday.. I got to thinking about how people connect the dots in their life to make an entire picture. For Reid, I'm supplying the dots for a time when he won't be able to access the memories of the events that happen to him now. Granted, the dots I'm providing are slanted with humor, but they are dots. A couple of years ago I witnessed a friend of a friend throw together a funny song for a birthday celebration and then sing it to the crowd. It was hilarious... a "dot" if you will. Then about 2 weeks ago I came across a fella named Jonathan Coulton. He completed a project called "A song a week" and he did it for 1 year. His songs are similar to the ones sung at the birthday... Now maybe... just maybe one of the people from the first song will listen to Jonathan's song and then remember how funny that first song was and the emotion attached to it... they might remember how they felt during that experience. Anyway, have a listen... connect a dot.
How many steps is it from your car to the front door of your work? Feel free to add your number in the comments of this post.
